So… are Bets and Gunther agreeing to be friends cause… I dunno what else I can gather from his “girlfriend” who he haven’t communicated with in months enthusiastically giving her blessing for him to couple up with another woman. Especially with compliments like “homes, predictable, and safe.” You know, the things every young guy vies to be called.
Also, Seriously who at this party HASN’T told Gunther and Luann to become a couple? Even Bets? It’s like the whole cast has ganged up to push them into settling for each other.
I gotta say I got a chuckle out of Luann’s dialogue in panel 3 coming off like, “Oh Gawd, NO! I’m not into boring, predictable Gunther, Bets! (I’ve never been as desperate you ;P lol). Me? I’d rather jump out a plane miles up in the air and challenge death than date him! Really!” Gotta love the consistency, Luann has been dodging his advances since junior high.
Okay, this is definitely a curveball. Is Bets using this as a nice way of dumping Gunther kind of like Rosa did except, she is pointing out that Luann is good for him along with the fact that Gunther needs the security of home and that their lives lie on different paths just as Rosa did? Did the photo make her realize that the G-Man and her are simply too different or is Bets so insecure that she thinks that she pushed Gunther away when she chose to stay on the road but still wants to be with him?
The Gunther’s Alter Ego wants to be spontaneous and chaotic that rebels against his upbringing of being homey like his mother’s personality. Gunther grow up without a father figure!
Gunther needs to get Bets out of there and take her somewhere they can talk without being interrupted. But that won’t happen, because we need to see what everyone else will do to try to influence the outcome — will people say, “We sure thought they were a couple!” or “Gunther’s been interested in Luann since eighth grade”? Will Luann protest too much (instead of bowing out, as she had seemed to do)? We forget that a comic strip has to be funny, so more hijinks will have to ensue at the party before Bets is convinced…and that still doesn’t mean they’ll stay together.

It also looks like Bets realizes why she and Gunther did not work. Why she chose the road in the first place. Now she realizes she came back to Gunther not because she missed him…but because road life is lonely. Doing it alone is lonely. She just need a companion. she knows Gunther is not her companion if she wants to continue with the road life So, will she stay for Gunther or hit the road again and find her new companion?
Apparently, Bets will never be able to free herself from the networks, if someone thinks something without context for her it must be true. And Gunther imposes so little that no one believes him. This plot twist feels very anticlimactic.

This is brilliant writing and an answer, think, to a dilemma that GnK had seemingly painted themselves into when they brought a tempestous, strong-willed, smart, but obnoxious (yes she was pretty obnoxious with the social media, even if we are using it NOW) Black girl into the strip to be the girlfriend of the legacy characrer, Gunther. Most posters don’t care, only a few have been outright racist, but what bothered this poster was how she was hated beyond all reson because of what? Selfishness, social media, using Gunther? Well, as I thought today’s Wednesday panels obviate all of that with the brilliant expository device of having Bets express her feelings for Gunther, in front of everyone, renounce, to some extent, her social media obession (only to have Steph seem to enjoy it here, that is probably going to be dealt with next, I think) whille today she states an obvious truth, both Gunther and Luann are fundamentally different in their lives than Bets, although Luann, if she would just grow up, has some adventure in her; they’re boring, risk adverse (not really Luann as she is going skydiving to impress Walt/Piro and beat or equal Tara’s implicit taunt), good kids, who’ve known each other since grammar school, so they’d make a good couple as Bets put it, Boring! And one other point, opposites attract in this strip, and Bets and Gunther are clearly attrated to each other. Luann is not the person who can do something with Gunther’s passivity, beside loving the honest soul he is,, but she needs a man who brings her adventurous side out. Bets meets those deep needs that the overly protected momma’s boy needs to slay in the tech world though. She is a battler.

I really hope that starting to follow the Stars cousins in their adventures will help change the idea that others have of her. Can’t wait to read the arc where they go skydiving.

I agree it’s time for certain people to leave if all they’re gonna do is complain. Such comments have already driven several fans of the strip to stop commenting for fear of being attacked for defending the strip. If you enjoy reading, fine, but to always harp on the characters and plot serves no useful purpose. If you don’t enjoy the strip for what it is then go away and WRITE YOUR OWN FAN FICTION any way you want to do it! I think you’ll find writing and drawing a daily comic strip is no easy task.
They’re talking, that’s a start! Whether they stay together or not, and whether Gunther and Luann end up together or not, it needs to be something decided while talking openly.

When Bets says “I get why you’d pick Luann”, she means she understands why Gunther would pick Luann, in a hypothetical way. You’d = You Would. Bets knows they are not together, but sees why Gunther could possibly find Luann a suitable partner. Both Gunther and Bets still think they are a couple, so of course Gunther would not be dating Luann.
Bets is not breaking up with Gunther and he will not break up with her. They are just acknowledging their different personality types. Bets is a little insulting to Luann when she says that Luann would be well suited to Gunther’s boring nature.
This is so normal yet not. Bets is being honest, she’s confused, wants what’s best for the love of her life and doesn’t plan on being an unwanted 3rd wheel.
HA! I was right – or at least, more right than wrong! I predicted that Bets’s “aha!” moment was about recognizing the obvious connection between Gunther and Luann. I was wrong in thinking that she might direct her anger at Gunther and/or Luann, in addition to herself.
Respectfully Luann, you are paying for the gear & expertise to throw yourself out of a plane SAFELY. Not only did she JUST SEE how full of manure social media is, she seems to can’t help believing it.Gunther seems to fall for women who, in the process of being true to themselves, can’t seem to be with him while they do that.When he finds one who can be their own person and still be with him – then he’ll be set.I’m not sure that’s any character in the comic that we’ve seen yet.If all the characters were all grown up and had their lives figured out, there would be no more comic left.

I agree it’s time for certain people to leave if all they’re gonna do is complain. Such comments have already driven several fans of the strip to stop commenting for fear of being attacked for defending the strip. If you enjoy reading, fine, but to always harp on the characters and plot serves no useful purpose. If you don’t enjoy the strip for what it is then go away and WRITE YOUR OWN FAN FICTION any way you want to do it! I think you’ll find writing and drawing a daily comic strip is no easy task.

Each made their choices for whatever reasons. I don’t think either are ready for a long term relationship. Gunther has been adventurous, but realizes he needs to prepare for the future. Bets is more shortsighted and in the moment adventurist. Luann doesn’t know what she wants. To thine own self be true! But maybe not in this strip! ;-)

When Bets says “I get why you’d pick Luann”, she means she understands why Gunther would pick Luann, in a hypothetical way. You’d = You Would. Bets knows they are not together, but sees why Gunther could possibly find Luann a suitable partner. Both Gunther and Bets still think they are a couple, so of course Gunther would not be dating Luann.
