I’ve heard some stores have starting refusing to take checks, because it slows down checkout. I have not heard of any store taking a debit card and not a credit card. Just have Luann pay with her phone and refresh her bank balance later.
What is wrong with CASH ?? Maybe some customers do not like cash because they have to keep track of what they spent. But I’ll stick with cash as long as they’ll take it. Unfortunately some businesses do not take cash – they want credit/debit cards, which gives them more information about how to contact you to offer thousands more purchasing opportunities from them and thousands of their affiliates.
That’s why I like the self-checkout, one line, multiple places to checkout. Unlike the registers with a clerk, the second I pick a register every single person in front of me becomes “Those people.” To watch people get in line at the other registers after I do, zip through their line and out the door while I haven’t moved is just the best use of my day.
When I happen to be behind a person who pays by check after their stuff is run up and they have to fill out all of it when they could have filled out most of it before completion, I’m glad I have my cell phone and can read the latest news and catch up!
As a long time friend who is in his early 70s is fond of saying, “There is still a Generation Gap. We’re on the other side of it now. And we’re STILL RIGHT!!”
I ordered at a local mall restaurant and since I didn’t have cash they refused my order and told me to find an ATM and come back cash in hand. First time in my long life this happened! Has anyone else encountered this and why?
Just how far behind the times is the USA? I haven’t seen anyone pay by cheque in a shop for 20 years or more! I haven’t written any myself for 30+ years, and the only cheques I receive are refunds from the taxman (always welcome!).
If you don’t pay with a credit card, you are leaving money on the table unless you get a discount. Of course, the liberals in congress want to get rid of cash back features.
Some businesses, such as utilities, offer online payment options which deducts funds from checking acccounts, for which there are no fees as opposed to using debit, credit or PayPal.
If she was a privileged professional victim Liberal she and all her friends behind her in line would simply run out of the store with it saying they are entitled to it. Then go down to the Gucci handbag store to resupply their eBay sites and torch a Target on the way home.
Really, who doesn’t take credit cards! Actually, many places won’t take a check, there are even places that won’t take cash. It has been more than a decade since I ever saw a place that wouldn’t take credit cards.
I was behind a guy with an overflowing cart full of stuff. Finally done and couldn’t remember his PIN! Just left the store. I got tired of my cards being hacked and just use cash.
How sad to see Nancy become one of Those people, the ones that no one would want to have before of them. This help to remember that it can happen to anyone, no one is safe!
Today’s story brought back a painful memory for me at Sam’s club. I used to do my grocery shopping once a month there. Once, after having all my food scanned and boxed and in the cart, I pulled my wallet out only to find my credit card missing with no way to pay. I momentarily panicked because I had no idea where the card was, but it suddenly flashed through my head that I had to make a copy of my card for some reason, and it was back home cozied on the copier entirely unaware that its absence was causing such angst in my life. I asked if I could leave my groceries in the cart, race back home, retrieve my card, return and then pay…which surprisingly I was allowed to do. Although there wasn’t much racing back and forth to home and back since during the time I had been in the store, Mother Nature decided to dump a healthy amount of snow outside making the roads very slick…..on the first day of Spring! Eventually I did get things paid for and I gave my credit card a stern talking to so that it would never forget to return to my wallet again.
We have one of those grocery stores that don’t take credit cards and I have never been able to understand why. They are the only merchant in town who won’t take a credit card.
We pay EVERYTHING on our Visa & pay it in full every month… never pay interest. We earn so many points, we never have to pay for airfare & we travel a lot!
This may be a “one of those people” jokes, but frankly I’d put the onus on the store itself for being “one of THOSE places.” What kind of huge corporate chain store doesn’t take credit cards?
Our utility companies have authorization to deduct charges from our bank account, Instacart charges my credit card and good old Amazon pretty much takes care of the rest. The only checks I write, with their approval, are to my cleaner, gardener and those out of date insurance companies who haven’t figured out a way for me to pay electronically. We keep cash for emergencies and it came in handy one time when a neighbor’s son had an accident and he needed cash to pay the tow truck driver. Times really have changed…
I write checks, pay in cash, pay online, pay by debit card, and pay by credit card. It all depends on what I’m paying. I use my credit card the most, because it’s protected. Debit card theft can wipe out your account and you’re not protected. Credit cards protect you after the first 50, although mine have never charged me when my cards are compromised (it happens more than I’d like, but my bank catches it immediately! They contact me to verify anything suspicious.)
Some places get flustered when you use cash; today’s young cashiers don’t know how to count out change!
I try to bring a crossword magazine with me, or a novel, wherever I go, to have something to do when this happens. It’s not to be passive-aggressive, though I can’t deny that it doesn’t bother me if that’s the effect that ends up occuring.
“Yes, I’d like to sign up for a membership card. I’ll take some stamps as well, and can I get $300 back? I have coupons too. Lots of coupons. Some are for products you didn’t have, or they’re expired, but I’m going use this time to argue about it until you have to call over your manager. Also, do you do refi? I’d really like to refi my house. Can we do that before you finish checking out?”
~Every person in front of me in line at the grocery store, ever.
I was in line behind at older lady who wrote a check. The checkout person had to enter the check routing # into the system, but didn’t know which was the routing # on the check. Nor did I, nor did the lady behind me. But she googled it and solved the problem. Had to use the internet to use a check! We all thought it was pretty funny!!!!
I will admit that despite my age (71) I’m still cool and with it and get exasperated at the “old people” who do this sort of thing. The trouble is, these and many other “old people”, are younger than me! Hey, if I don’t act like one of the old people, I must not be one of the old people!
As for those who talk down to the rest of us because they “never use checks” or “don’t have any credit cards”, try surviving in our modern consumer society without them! There are plenty of payees (such as local government offices) that will only take checks or cash, and try making a reservation for a rental car or hotel room or buying an airline ticket without a credit card! On top of that, if you pay for a hotel room with a debit card, they may still do a “hold” on as much as $500 for the cleaning deposit. Sure, the hold gets cancelled later, but it could be several days and you don’t have access to those funds all that time. Using a credit card is vastly simpler in this case!
This seems a bit unrealistic, unless she’s shopping at the oldest store in town. Many stores are now refusing cash and only accept credit or debit cards, and most stores stopped accepting checks years ago.
Can’t remember which of two phone numbers it is? Try one… then the other.Or… only and always use one of them.Or… put an entry in your cell phone under the store name with the number used.
Two stereotypes make for a non funny strip. Your being “that young girl” Luann. Try saying something helpful (for once) rather than reminding mom of her age, and she *might return the favor and start treating you like less of a burden on the family budget/adult.
This still isn’t as bad as the couple I saw at Walmart at the self-serve register (the kind with the conveyor belt) buying their groceries with a large bag of loose change. plunk….plunk….plunk….plunk….plunk….
Why would debit card be good and credit cards not? Even more, why would they accept checks but not credit cards? With a credit card you’re sure you’re getting the money, but with a check it could be bad.
There’s somewhere that’ll still take checks but which won’t take credit cards? (Credit cards cost the merchant a fee, but checks are risky since they are essentially just a promissory note from the customer and there’s little recourse if they bounce.)
There is no store in the modern world that does not take credit cards but does take either debit cards or checks. It’s either cash only, or some combo of credit or Venmo/Apple Pay.
The only thing funny about this one is that there’s no editorial oversight to prevent such glaring mistakes from hitting print.

But somehow, it just doesn’t have any punch.
