I’ve heard some stores have starting refusing to take checks, because it slows down checkout. I have not heard of any store taking a debit card and not a credit card. Just have Luann pay with her phone and refresh her bank balance later.

Most places I know don’t accept checks anymore. Accept debit cards and not credit cards? Never heard of such a place.

I suppose that was the only way to set up the punchline.

But somehow, it just doesn’t have any punch.

What is wrong with CASH ?? Maybe some customers do not like cash because they have to keep track of what they spent. But I’ll stick with cash as long as they’ll take it. Unfortunately some businesses do not take cash – they want credit/debit cards, which gives them more information about how to contact you to offer thousands more purchasing opportunities from them and thousands of their affiliates.

Almost nobody uses cheques in the UK. We use contactless debit cards or Apple Pay, so the PIN number is only needed for large transactions.

That’s why I like the self-checkout, one line, multiple places to checkout. Unlike the registers with a clerk, the second I pick a register every single person in front of me becomes “Those people.” To watch people get in line at the other registers after I do, zip through their line and out the door while I haven’t moved is just the best use of my day.

Today’s story brought back a painful memory for me at Sam’s club. I used to do my grocery shopping once a month there. Once, after having all my food scanned and boxed and in the cart, I pulled my wallet out only to find my credit card missing with no way to pay. I momentarily panicked because I had no idea where the card was, but it suddenly flashed through my head that I had to make a copy of my card for some reason, and it was back home cozied on the copier entirely unaware that its absence was causing such angst in my life. I asked if I could leave my groceries in the cart, race back home, retrieve my card, return and then pay…which surprisingly I was allowed to do. Although there wasn’t much racing back and forth to home and back since during the time I had been in the store, Mother Nature decided to dump a healthy amount of snow outside making the roads very slick…..on the first day of Spring! Eventually I did get things paid for and I gave my credit card a stern talking to so that it would never forget to return to my wallet again.

Our utility companies have authorization to deduct charges from our bank account, Instacart charges my credit card and good old Amazon pretty much takes care of the rest. The only checks I write, with their approval, are to my cleaner, gardener and those out of date insurance companies who haven’t figured out a way for me to pay electronically. We keep cash for emergencies and it came in handy one time when a neighbor’s son had an accident and he needed cash to pay the tow truck driver. Times really have changed…

I write checks, pay in cash, pay online, pay by debit card, and pay by credit card. It all depends on what I’m paying. I use my credit card the most, because it’s protected. Debit card theft can wipe out your account and you’re not protected. Credit cards protect you after the first 50, although mine have never charged me when my cards are compromised (it happens more than I’d like, but my bank catches it immediately! They contact me to verify anything suspicious.)

Some places get flustered when you use cash; today’s young cashiers don’t know how to count out change!

I will admit that despite my age (71) I’m still cool and with it and get exasperated at the “old people” who do this sort of thing. The trouble is, these and many other “old people”, are younger than me! Hey, if I don’t act like one of the old people, I must not be one of the old people!

As for those who talk down to the rest of us because they “never use checks” or “don’t have any credit cards”, try surviving in our modern consumer society without them! There are plenty of payees (such as local government offices) that will only take checks or cash, and try making a reservation for a rental car or hotel room or buying an airline ticket without a credit card! On top of that, if you pay for a hotel room with a debit card, they may still do a “hold” on as much as $500 for the cleaning deposit. Sure, the hold gets cancelled later, but it could be several days and you don’t have access to those funds all that time. Using a credit card is vastly simpler in this case!

There is no store in the modern world that does not take credit cards but does take either debit cards or checks. It’s either cash only, or some combo of credit or Venmo/Apple Pay.

The only thing funny about this one is that there’s no editorial oversight to prevent such glaring mistakes from hitting print.
