They both look surprised that Gunther said, “I love you.” I don’t remember him saying that to Rosa. Did those words hit Bets in the face so that she has to face reality? It will take awhile for him to come down from this relationship.
Deer caught in the headlights!! She’s in shock and doesn’t know how to respond to hearing “I love you.” He doesn’t really care about how she’s been behaving tonight, just that they’re together is all that matters to him. She probably feels guilt because gun is showing her romance, selflessness, and kindness where she has shown him none.
Wha…..? What the heck happened Firstly, I expected Gunther to say to bugger off and go. He did not. I am disappointed in you. Again, no backbone. Now, Bets walks out after these three words was said? I almost think she is scared. Is she scared of love?
To be fair, we don’t know exactly why Bets left. It could be:
1. Weinie world fries are upsetting her little tum-tum.
2. Seeing Gunther in love has made her nauseous (which I can kind of understand).
3. She has been pushing him towards a break-up and she is upset because her tactic has clearly failed.
4. She is off calling Tiffany to see if she can come over and make things up because she has realized that she ruined a perfectly wonderful time with a guy who loves her.
5. She is not done ranting, but now realizes that Gunther is not a good audience for a rant, so she is going out to find a random stranger so she can finish her rant.
6. Never fall in love with your costumer.
7. She is off to tweet about it to her on-line fans and then she will come back and try to convince Gunther to do a TikTok video about proposing.
8. She spotted the storyline for next week involving Shannon and she has decided to make a run for it.
Oh Wow…and here I thought Gunther would break up with Bets. This one declaration should have been able to salvage the “romantic evening for two” and instead…wow.
She wants to be his #1. Expects him to agree with her about all this Tiffany stuff, be supportive of her arguments, drop whatever he is doing to do what she wants whenever she pulls his chain, but can’t handle the ILY? What’s up with that? SO, what does she want in a ‘boyfriend’?
♡ It’s OK, Gunther, she was so excited to hear that, she had to go to use the restroom, hence, her having to “go”.♡ ♡She’ll be right back in a sec♡.

Ok. Seriously now, and setting the all sarcasm aside (no more little hearts), I did mention earlier in the week, that Bets would be in control of everything, and now the apparent break – up without even discussing with Gunther first. I know, there are some heads exploding here because they could not see this coming. But, like in real life, things do not always go the way we think things should go, and it happens here in the Luanniverse as well. I did not think the break – up would be this abrupt; much like throwing a prop away after the final show. Greg should have left him in Peru, or maybe this will be a learning experience for him.

Just to take everyone’s mind off this disastrous outcome, I’m inviting everyone here to a huge barbecue at my house on Sunday between 2:00 PM and 2:03 PM. Just look for the huge derigible shaped like Puddles (Luann’s dog) flying about 150 feet above the house – it will be easily visible from HWY 50 near Sacramento. There will be steaks, chicken, shrimp, hot dogs, and for some, I will even flop a few crows on the grill. See y’all here!
Charlie Brown just got dumped, and he’s better off for it. He was being used. I’ll bet this is when the Luanniverse circle closes with Ms. Bets on the outside. Maybe she’ll run into Aaron or Quill.
In short one of two things just happened: Bets is scared of commitment or she just had a moment of clarity and realized that she has been acting like a self ingrate, especially to Gunnie! Time will tell, probably next week unless G&K shift gears and take us back to Casa Tiff or the life of Luann or Brad and Toni etc…… I hope she apologizes to Gunnie but things never come easy to Gunnie so I suspect he will spend some time wondering what the heck went wrong. Cue ‘90s Canadian Indie band The Pursuit of Happiness’ “I’m an Adult Now”, the lyrics fit the mood Gunnie likely is in!
Wow Bets! A vote with your feet, but you are his ride though! Oh well Gun, think of all the time you will save not having to be the wardrobe guy for the webpage!
Poor Gunther! Bets’ reaction to his “I Love You” has to cut like a knife. I hope he now wakes up to the fact that she’s been using him as a prop and doesn’t love him. I wonder how he’s getting home?
Makes me think of the old Frank Sinatra song, “and then I go and spoil it all by saying something stupid like I love you.” Bets was stunned and made the right move. Gunther is just over reacting to a cute girl who has actually paid attention to him.
Ah fear of commitment. Who would have thunk it? After Bets raises the stakes on a choice between friends and a commitment to her (specifically Tiffany who mostly cares about Tiffany) then goes and tells her he loves her. I think, for whatever reason, perhaps related to her non Luannverse past she has poor self-esteem (sorry for the shrink stuff, but this is our projections -:). The cosplay and the social media is all a way of compensating for it. This is different than Rosa. Rosa did exactly what she wanted and stayed with her passion leaving no room for Gunther, but here Gunther shows his feelings for Bets. Now the ball is in her court. I think the game is not over yet. Many here won’t agree, but I remain optimistic. Luannverse time will tell.
It’s not that he cares more about Tiff, it’s that he wants to be on good terms with everyone. And in the case of Tiff that requires a lot more effort (although Bets is coming up on the outside).
Bets first appears April 1, 2019. Out of curiosity, before this installment posted, I went back and re-read all the Bets arcs. I’m not that surprised. From the beginning, Bets has been possessive, controlling, jealous, and narcissistic. Sure, she is nerdy/smart, fun, cute, outgoing, and lively. Although it seemed like Gunther was having fun, it did seem like a dysfunctional relationship in the making.
What just happened? Didn’t Bets know? She wanted someone who wouldn’t never lie to her and now that she’s found him she can’t believe it and walks away? Is she afraid of true love and devotion? What’s wrong with her?!?!?! BETS, CAME BACK AND EXPLAINS YOURSELF!!!!!!!!!
She doesn’t know how to respond to that one. She’ll go to and sit in the car and cry some because she cannot show that kind of emotion in front of Gunther. It doesn’t fit with being tough and in control.
You never use those three words without first getting to first base, and by that I mean you must get intimate with her first. Try to get touchy feely with her, and if she backs off you know she’s not ready for more. Do this and you will never never get rejected.
I feel like many of the commenters are people who have never been in a successful relationship or who are too old to remember what being in a relationship at 20 is like.
Methinks Gunther is confusing his feelings with Stockholm Syndrome. As for Bets, controlling narcissists not only demand loyalty, but then tend to have contempt for those who allow themselves to be controlled by them. And utter disdain for anyone who falls for them, because deep down they actually despise themselves. That’s my take on why she left.
As Jerry Seinfeld says to George Costanza after the same situation, “I see a pretty big matzoh ball hanging out there.” https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/f12e334e-b032-41dd-b99d-feda95947e38
Hit the road, Bets, and don’cha come back no more no more no more no more, hit the road, Bets, and don’cha come back no more! (To to tune of Hit the Road, Jack!). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8Tiz6INF7I
Well this just got even more difficult to bear watching. I don’t even mind Bets that much if Gunther would just man up for a change. Maybe they’d find a partnership not dictatorship!
Wow! Who mentioned her comment about “mushy” dinner? Maybe she’s NOT a romantic. If she were embarrassed, that’s a strong reaction, to walk out. If she doesn’t feel the same way, she might not want to get THAT involved and walked out. Still…I had her as domineering, insecure in relationships, and perhaps putting on a “show” for her followers. There were moments in their relationship when she wanted to cuddle. Was that just for show? I didn’t think so, but now I’m confused. :-o
Those were my first thoughts, but what does Gunther feel? Is this the first time he’s expressed love. I’m hazy on the Rosa relationship dynamics. There are so many unanswered questions, I don’t see this ending here……
A real friend wouldn’t have just turned and run caring only for themselves. A real lady would’ve sat with Gunther and said….“honey, don’t you think it’s a bit early for the “L” word? Lets grow a bit more together first. One day I promise we’ll get there together. Lets go somewhere and study biology a bit more…”. Ah yes, that would’ve been a healthy reply. But no. You ain’t gotta burn the whole thing due to a hiccup in the trip. Just apply a patch and keep on truckin!
Bah, a worse reaction would have been her laughing. This is still opening for him going after her and finding she didn’t know how to handle this declaration but is really moved by it.
If she had just been using him as a prop, a love declaration would be perfect and easy, meaning he’d be totally under her control so she would have no reason to run away. Well, he has been under her control so far. So there’s also the possibility that she now finds out it was out of love and not just because he’s a submissive guy who likes to be bossed around by his dominatrix. In other words, she thought it was their game, and realizes it’s more serious. The fact that she leaves shows she feels some kind of responsibility or a choice to be made.
Of course, she could just be disgusted by his declaration, but she was pushing him to tell he cares more about her than Tiff, so she did get what she wanted.
I’d be leaning, however, toward the idea that it’s the first time someone tells her he loves her and she doesn’t know how to react. Maybe her bossy attitude is a way to always remain in control so she won’t depend on love. Bah, we’ll find out soon enough, within a year or two… But most probably next week.
Obviously Gunther’s saying that he loves her is NOT something Bett’s expected. It caight her so surprisingly she doesn’t know how to react. Does she have ANY feelings toward Gunther, or, is he just her social networking tool, cosplay costumer, and, partner? Enquiring minds want to know!
It’s okay to tell someone you love them. It shouldn’t mean anything more than just that. It doesn’t mean you both have to immediately be in the same kind of love, or that you have to end your relationship. He never said I love you and we need to get married or I love you do you love me too. Maybe they both need more time to sort out where they are headed.
Well c’mon. There was no smartphone broadcasting her reaction to their followers on social media. Everyone knows Bets likes her spontaneity carefully planned and documented.
Reminds me of an episode of Big Bang; Leonard and Penny are in bed and Leonard says “I love you”. In that episode, it is Penny who is insecure. But all ends well — by the end of last episode, they are married and expecting.
If Gunth does stay with Bets, I hope he realizes he’ll have to sever all ties with his “friendssince third grade,” at least the female ones. As far as his male friends well, Knute has long since disappeared, I’m not sure how long he’s known Ox, but I don’t think Les made an appearance until high school. Not that Les and Gunther have a friendship, more of an armed truce. :P :D
If Bets catches him even saying hello to Luann, Bernice or (God forbid) Tiff, she’ll have a minor meltdown and use the “you care more about them than you do me” line she used this time.
So … the user walks. Interesting. This is probably the signal to say screw the readers, and switch to a completely different story line on Monday. Unless this is one of those rare ones that carry over to Sunday.
Interesting reaction to those words when she just spent $300 for a gala pirate’s night that supposedly showed her feelings for him, regardless of how the night actually turned out….
Oops! Gunthie tends to fall in love with women that just want to use him as a convenience. Or drag him off to a foreign country to do grunt work in an office.
Is Bets going to make Gunther walk home? Maybe she is so surprised she forgot she drove him there. I hope she remembers him before he has to walk home.
I think I understand Bet’s reaction. My last girlfriend left when I said those words. She thought I was getting too serious, she just wanted to have a light hearted friends with benefits relationship
As a reformed idealist myself, I have to object to the way Rosa is being described here. First, I disagree with LUANN1212’s characterization of Rosa as being similar to Bets at all. Idealists don’t even have room in their hearts and heads for themselves, let alone someone else. Rosa’s parents were pushing her to go to ivy league schools and become a high paid professional (in part because most middle income legal immigrants to the US do that with ALL their kids, figuring that stability, financial success and prestige are the American dream). Rosa broke away from that because she honestly wanted to help others; she didn’t just use Gunther as a prop in some social media drama like Bets has. Secondly, to whoever said Rosa dragged Gunther off to Peru to work in an office: Rosa thought her uncle was going to give her a job in a clinic helping poor people. She had no idea she’d end up working in an office, and she finally left that office to go work in the kind of place she intended to go to. AND I think Rosa actually did love Gunther, as much as an idealist can love another person rather than an ideal…
I agree that she doesn’t know how to handle Gunther saying the 1-4-3.I don’t agree that she’s necessarily dumping him (yet).I am afraid that she will post the news to her social media followers (and worse yet – possibly take a poll on how she should respond) before she has had any real reaction/conversation with him about it.
Wow! Well, that will certainly ice’s the cake. Poor Gunther.Well, better to see this now in his journey than later.Come on with me Gun, I will buy you a beer.
Gotta wonder if Gunther (with help from the authors, of course) had been thinking and feeling about love for Bets for a while, or did he just blurt it out?
I see things differently I guess. I think Bets realized how Gunther feels about her. If I had to guess, she is either going out to call Tiffany or go back to her house.
Awfully high-maintenance, Bets is. And it’s beginning to look like she’s the kind of person who pulls a relationship up by the roots just to see how it’s doing.
Bets has probably gone back onto the dating app already. This one didn’t work out for her the way that she wanted. Now, it’s time for Gunther to adopt some more cats.
1. Gunther just said “Here is my heart.”2. Bets is stunned — she doesn’t know how to take this at age 18 or 19.3. Both her emotions and reasoning abilities are overwhelmed, so she has to flee the scene.4. She has a backstory that has to be rendered to explain a good chunk of her response. Remember that we have yet to meet her family or learn her history, as opposed to Desdemona (who is quite a hoot).5. I don’t think this is over.6. This will go on for a very long time (see the Brad-Toni romance)7. As Anton Chekhov wrote more than a century ago, “All comedies end at a wedding.”8. As any reader of romance novels and viewer of romantic comedies know, the plotline involves many twists and turns — it is not the subway tracks on the A Train from Aqueduct to Rockaway, which go in a straight line through Jamaica Bay. The two lovers fight over everything from their conflicting pasts to the wedding location. Rivals try to horn in and wreck the plan. The characters are often caught between a choice of lovers.
In this case, I think of the cheery movie “Something New,” in which Sanaa Lathan, a lovelorn, staid, but professionally successful black woman, finds her true love in a white landscape architect who enjoys hiking (which she doesn’t). Then she has to choose between him and that classic “Ideal Black Man” that she meets at a party after she has a battle with the architect. It’s a fun movie, and very appropriate to this situation.
So my take: Bets loves Gunther, she knows it, but she just can’t admit it to him…or herself.
And that’s all I have to say about that. Which should be enough.
This was never about Gunther. I believe we are going to find out Bets was very unpopular and bullied as a child. I suspect one (if not the) reason will be a lack of money – that she was shunned for being poor and probably very poorly dressed/groomed. She’s nerdy enough that she likely did well academically, but she retreated into a fantasy world of sci-fi cosplay where she could be any hero/figure she wanted that wasn’t herself.
She has been controlling and jealous like any immature, insecure girlfriend who has no experience with an equal, adult relationship. Her obsession with pleasing her “fans” is a result of her (mistaken) belief that internet strangers giving you thumbs-up means you are popular and well-liked and that these people she doesn’t even really know are her “friends.”
The money issues turned her into someone who charges 50% of the profits to “help” her boyfriend"s friend. And it turned her into someone determined to make it as an internet “influencer.”
This dinner was not supposed to be an actual romantic night with her boyfriend. She even refered to Tiff’s efforts as “mushy.” Bets does not live in the real world very much. She’s turned her life (and to large extent Gunther’s) into one big stage show, complete with costumes and sets where she pretend to have a fun, romantic dinner with her beau for the entertainment of her online “friends.” (Hello, pirate theme. That $300 was supposed to build her an elaborate stage for her make believe world that she would have then showed off to those fans; it was a double investment. One part to playact for fans and one part an investment in her influencer brand.) She freaked out when Tiff gave her a nice dinner for two that would have made her take the night off from her acting and just be with Gunther.
Can she be “redeemed”? Sure. But she has a long way to go, a lot of growing up to do, and a lot of apologies to make. Perhaps Gunther’s declaration will be enough to set her off down that road.
On the one hand, I say “Oh wow!”. But on the other hand, when my now husband first told me he loved me, it was via text and I was in a parking garage and almost ran into a wall (yes, yes, I know, shouldn’t have been reading the text but IT. WAS. RIGHT. THERE.). So, I can understand having to take a moment to process it. For the record, I texted it back….then was off to date-night with him :)
There are no exceptions for her behavior throughout her and Gunthers relationship- she was a controlling and selfish person. And even with that he still puts her first all through her selfish whining and me me me attitude about the dinner party. So now to top it off, she walks out on himafter he says I love you.She doesnt deserve anyones love. What she deserves is to have her butt kicked so far that her ancestors will feel it.
Judging from the fact the G doesn’t run after Bets, I’m wondering if he took a gamble when he said that to see what her true feelings for him were? He’s smart enough to know by now he’s being used, so maybe this was his sneaky way of getting even with Bets or at least ending the relationship without her becoming the “victim” as she blasted out any other kind of response of his to all of their fans.
She feels something for Gunther: she had wanted a romantic dinner with him, albeit a pirate one. You don’t plan $300 dinners for someone who you’re just fond of. I guess she didn’t see it coming – I sure didn’t. And there were no signs how deeply Gun felt about Bets. Feels off. But I don’t think they are over (though I wish they were).
Okay, I did not expect that. It seems to me that Bets doesn’t want to be loved. She wants a “yes-man,” someone who will agree with her every whim and wish, and someone she can parade around to show how cool she is. But love? The “L” word? I think that scares her to death. Seems Bets probably has a really sad backstory where love is concerned.
Nothing more stranger then saying those three words. My experience is about the same, says them first girl bolts lol. Guns expression after saying it even surprised himself.

Uh……. this is NOT a promising way for Bets to respond to a statement of, “I love you.” from Gunther.
If this is her real response and she does not want love from Gun….. that is just bad and it feels like Gunther is being used.
If this is her response because she is somehow nervous or psychologically fearful of love…. then I guess this could still get interesting.

You never use those three words without first getting to first base, and by that I mean you must get intimate with her first. Try to get touchy feely with her, and if she backs off you know she’s not ready for more. Do this and you will never never get rejected.

Sorry, Gunther, she doesn’t want your love and never did. You were just a prop for her to use on Instagram, a means to her end of internet popularity.
But how Gunther can say he loves her after witnessing her selfish behavior just means he still hasn’t gotten it.
Now he’s been dumped in a hot dog restaurant while wearing a pirate costume. Not exactly a high point of his career.

Just apply a patch and keep on truckin!
buer over 3 years ago

It’s okay to tell someone you love them. It shouldn’t mean anything more than just that. It doesn’t mean you both have to immediately be in the same kind of love, or that you have to end your relationship.

AND I think Rosa actually did love Gunther, as much as an idealist can love another person rather than an ideal…
rmbdot over 3 years ago
I agree that she doesn’t know how to handle Gunther saying the 1-4-3.I don’t agree that she’s necessarily dumping him (yet).I am afraid that she will post the news to her social media followers (and worse yet – possibly take a poll on how she should respond) before she has had any real reaction/conversation with him about it.

So here’s my take, for what it’s worth:

Maybe she’s off to apologize to Tiffany? Doesn’t seem like it though.
