And chaos ensues. Gunther proposes, does Bets say “What? I’m out of here!” or does she consider his loving gesture. Irma gets mad at Al for opening a can of worms with the focus on marriage. IMHO Irma thinks Gunther should not get married for a long, long time as she still thinks of him as a teenager in high school. The one way to anger Irma is to do anything she thinks might not be Gunther’s interest, like get married at 20. So the ball is in Bets court now, what does she do? Hard to believe this arc simply started with Gunther wanting to cook XMas dinner and invite Bets over to share the holiday with his family……
Deep down, Gunther knew this wasn’t going to fly. That’s why he was initially cautious about the idea.
While the reaction is poor, the consequences are better. Learn to accept responsibility for your own lives, young ones. Have fun on your own dime. The guest house was built to give the Grays privacy as newlyweds and provide shelter for their charges. Gunther going to college was getting major financial help; who knows what Les is doing with this opportunity.
Gunther has a growing moment. His mother doesn’t think he’s ready for marriage (would she ever?) and Bets is not likely to accept a proposal. Time to really start navigating through the women of your life.
For those doubting Gunther’s choice, he is an adult, he knows what he wants, and he’s not letting his mother or anyone else make his choice for him. Bets isn’t perfect, but neither is he. He knows what her issues are and he’s talked with her openly about them. He has learned how to cool her jealousy with a few key words. He’s found somebody who actually enjoys the same things that he does.
He knows how to get out of a relationship that’s not a good fit, which he did with Rosa, so unless you amnesia-out his prior character development, you can’t write him off as unfit to make his own choices. He could have bailed without hurting her just by letting her run away, but he didn’t.
And Bets has shown that she can admit when she’s wrong, and grow. She could use therapy, but so can a lot of people, and there isn’t a character in this strip who isn’t flawed—or, for that matter, in real life. She’s smart, hardworking, interesting, and sees Gunther’s worth. And she’s a natural antidote for Gunther’s Mommy issues.
Gunther is proposing because they want a bit of fun? No way. It’s absurd even for them. Does Bets have a job, and does it pay enough for everyone’s rents and tuitions? Al…what did you do? ha ha
This reminds me of the time that Chandler proposed to Monica because he thought he should. Clearly if he and Bets really want to live together they have to get their own place.
I doubt Bets will say “yes” because she’s too damaged by previous relationships. It would be a nice surprise if she did, but I doubt she is capable of it.
Bets starts a go fund me acc. Gunter applys for a sba loan to start a custom cosplay costume business , both become weathy, tells al to take ahike and mom that they are adults not some 6yr old
Gunny, Gunny, Gunny – do not let Al push you into an irrational decision. Asking someone to marry you is something that should be thought out well, and I do not think there has been enough time since the last two blow – ups to make this decision because someone pushed you into it. I can think of a lot better reasons to get married than having to do so to stay living where you are at.
This feels like a shotgun wedding even there are no shotguns present, Gunther is being pressured to prove to his mom that he is not her “little gunnie” anymore. At he same time he feels the need to prove too his step-father that he isn’t just shacking up with some nameless bimbo. And it parallels too closely to what happened in Greg Evans life 50 years ago. Was there a bun in the oven before Greg proposed? Is that why Mr, Grey’s first work was “Got a bun in the oven?” Is this why Al and Irma have become 50’s puritanical parents? Greg would have done better to leave his life out of this strip.
Wait… today is the anniversary of Greg and Betty and this strip is like a second marriage proposal by Greg to her? WOW! What a romantic gesture♡♡!!! So Elaborate, Funny, Theatrical and dramatic. Dunno if Bets will say yes to Gunther and his unpredictable marriage proposal, but this is So Sweet ♡! Mr. Greg Evans, you truly are amazing.
Oof. Basically what this shows is that Gunther’s mom is protective of Gunther (for the most part, but won’t let him gorw up) and Gunther is so attached to his mom, he’d rather get married and live witha roommate with his wife to stay close to his mom.
Bets is being driven away – or – she will recommend that they get their own apartment. She makes enough from her social media stuff and I THINK Gunther has his own job – or will need to get one.
Uncle Al. Always the financier. Tuesday and Wednesday emotions are heating up and Gunther is about to make a hasty, emotional decision. If Bets accepts the proposal (other commenters have already predicted this) and Gunther needs to pay rent, may as well move out, anyway.
So much for “Hey, Bets, let’s shack up, we don’t need to ask my Mom, it’s not like she has any say in it.”
I mean, seriously, how did Gunther think this was going to go down? He lives in a guest house on someone else’s property, he can’t just do whatever he wants. And if Al says no living together, then it’s no living together. You want your own rules, then move out.
And Gunther, this is NOT a smart reason to propose to somebody.
Dang, whoda thought at 6:51 am I’d be this far down the list of comments.I dont understand how Gunther, being a mommas boy, living w her all his life, doesnt know her view on things, and how he doesnt share them to some degree that this idea didnt give him any pause.Secondly, bets is not for him. I feel she is bossy, controlling, and to some degree, even if not conscious of it, using him for his stitchery skills.
I also want to encourage you, Greg, even though you will never see this, please maintain the good moral values we enjoyed in this comic for so many decades.
Premarital sex?! SCANDALOUS! Better for them to get married when they barely know each other so that their relationship self-destructs into a bitter divorce, wasting time and money.
Like I said, this is were Gunter tries to do the RIGHT thing. Then this is where Bets says “no” and breaks his heart. Now, if the GET Married, God Bless them. But don’t shack up before the wedding date and save the s3x for the consumation after marriage.
I suspect Al has issues regarding his sisters past (Ann Eiffle) and the resulting situation where Al ended up basically raising his nephew Les. He doesn’t want to end up raising any step grandkids. In the heat of the moment I think Al issued an ultimatum that he didn’t mean (they aren’t ready for marriage) and Gunther seized it as an easy way to get his way. All Gunther initially wanted was to cook Christmas dinner for his mom, Bets wanted to spend the holiday living together for the break, Gunther morphed that into living together over all, and now this has snowballed into a proposal – which no one is ready for. Someone needs to throw a bucket of ice water on them all so they can regroup and think things through. Also, Gunther should really meet Bets family to find out if the are as bad as she says they are and Gunthers mom needs to get to know Bets better.
Regardless of Bets’ answer, if I were Gunther, I’d be packing my bags, finding a PT job, and find a new place to live. It’s time for him to find independence
Gunther, if you’re an adult, like you claim, do the adult things. Get a job and support your values and lifestyle. When you sponge off of others, you live by their rules.
Al is correct atleast on one part. If he was paying rent then he could do what he wanted. How can he be living there rent free and still thinks he can do what he wants regarding that house?
They both like CosPlay but I just don’t see/feel any chemistry; not like with Toni and Brad. I just don’t like Bets and I don’t see this as long-term. Gunther needs to run in the opposite direction. I’m 62 and have been very happily by myself for nearly 25 yrs – I work part-time, 16 hrs a week and I go where I want, when I want, see whatever movie I want, watch whatever I want on TV, eat whatever I want (or not at all)…I am by myself but never alone – I have family and friends. I love my life and my freedom! You don’t HAVE to be in a romantic relationship to feel happy and fulfilled! I been in relationships where the other party just said “no” to everything/suggestion and was just a downer super-glued to the couch and video games – in his 40s!!! SO not worth it! Someone wise said “The thing everyone should realize is that the key to happiness is being happy by yourself and for yourself.”
Folks, if Bets accepts the proposal, it doesn’t mean IMMEDIATE marriage. It could be years down the road.AL is not LES’s dad. Nor Gunther’s dad. He has no say in G’s lifestyle. And Irma is STILL G’s mom. She’s upset with Al, and this is a problem. Is it the “D” word? Only time will tell.Tune in tomorrow: Same Bets time, Same Bets channel!
Gunther; even if Betts WERE to say yes to this spontaneous proposal, how would you support each other? Unless I’ve missed something, neither one of you has a job of any kind. (Though as good as cook as Gunther seems to be, I’d bet TJ would take him on.)
“I’m gonna propose to my girlfriend so she can live with me and not make my parents mad”… That’s even worse than getting married in order to get health insurance because one partner has a really good health care plan..
So now what? Gunther is getting married and Al and Irma are getting divorced? If Bets had any smarts, she’d say I’m too young to get married and so are you. Luann goes into a deep funk after realizing she’s loosing “charming, fascinating and handsome” Gunther? Tiffany goes into a deep funk after realizing she’s loosing “the kindest, funniest, sweetest guy she’s ever know?” Betty goes into a deep funk because her favorite step child is ruining his life yet again?
Don’t ask me! Ask Mordy. He’s getting pretty good at predictions! 8^ )
Maybe it’s time for Bets to head back to the dorm, or wherever. I’m sure there will be a nice ending to this arc; however, it has not been one of my favorites.
They can get married and support themselves by starting a costume business! Gunthie does the production and sewing and Betts handles the modeling and promotion through social media!
Comments & thoughts, in no particular order: mr. Gray it’s your stadium your bat your ball. you can make any rules you want. Gunthers mama : lady you need to loosen the apron strings and get a life, or you will lose your baby, eventually, forever, when he revolts. it won’t be pretty. Gunther: you know that your mother means well for you but she will continue to smother you and hinder your growth in almost every imaginable way. you’ve just got to get out from under her Over-protective wings. As for Betts, Gunther you take that woman grab her and just never let go. she’s nuts about you now and if it keeps up you will probably have the best mate possible for life. As for Betts, Betts you’ve got a good man there but your battle is probably going to be the toughest. you will have to pry Gunther away from those apron strings of his mama. She will Not give up her “baby” easily (if at all). it will not be easy. you will need the patience of a saint but trust me he will be worth it in the long run. Gunther, move in with Betts in her student housing. Don’t burn any bridges with your mom or Mr. Gray….yet.
As predicted, Gunther and Bets will become the new “marrieds” in this comic (after an engagement period). Uncle Al and Irma will relent and let them live together in the guest house. Maybe Bets will get Les to re-invent his image with a new haircut and a shave.
OMG! Al and Irma are FORCING them to marry. This is terrible. It actually happened to a friend of mine in high school. Her mom was behaving just like Irma. This girl got married early and about two years later I ran into her in college. She was older and wiser——and divorced from her high school boyfriend. But she HAD fulfilled her mother’s requirement to remain a virgin until marriage. She vowed if she ever had kids she would never put them through such a thing.
Right on schedule, the arc moves from crisis to impending train wreck. Next, Bets will tell Guns she loves him but is not ready for a wedding, and Gunther will – politely – tell his mom they will live somewhere else. By Saturday, Al and Irma will be spending Christmas without Gunther, and it will be chilly for Al as Irma begins to realize she has to let go of Guns and maybe stand up to Al a bit more. Irma will go looking for Guns and Bets and eventually find them living in a previously-unknown anteroom to The Fuse, working as holiday help.
Hilarity ensures as Al begins to comprehend a life with only Les and his money, and he yields to the season, granting Guns and Bets his blessing to live in the guest house for only $2,000 a month after a deposit on the furniture.
So Bets claims her family is dysfunctional. She should feel right at home with Gunther’s crazy family. If Al and Irma don’t want them living together in the guest house they should just say that. There is no need to insult them or coerce them to get married.
If nothing else, today’s strip really shows how’s us how far we have come with morals, family values and acceptable behavior in our society. This took me back to my childhood in the 50’s (Al especially) and the changes that occurred in the 60’s. Specifically, the “Pill” in 1961.Changed everything! I am not saying any of these things or ideas are right or wrong.I am just amazed at what all can change in 50 years! Congratulations to the Evans on their 50 years of marriage! Good for you!
Al Gray is right. If Gunther wants to play “adult” then he’d better make sure he can pay for his adult lifestyle on his own. Adulthood comes with responsibilities, especially financial ones.
Gunther: “We’re adults! I’m a man! We want to live together! Oh, but mommy, you and Al will keep supporting me won’t you? Paying all my bills? And you don’t mind adding Bets and supporting her too, now do you?”
Given how Bets scampered away in fear after that time Gunther said I love you, and despite her recent testing of the waters of trust, I’d say this was not the right move for Gunther for those reasons alone. But there are plenty more, such as that you don’t propose to someone on the spur of the moment in order to prove a point to your parents. Now he has put Bets on the spot, especially after she just claimed they were committed to each other. The best response she could make now that would save the day, is something like “maybe someday!”
Tomorrow’s strip will start with Gunther’s thought bubble showing Bet’s turning into wifezilla and the two of them living in the ’hood. The final panel will have Gunther saying “Strike the previous comment”.
Finish college, get jobs to support yourselves, rent your own apartment…then get married or whatever. At that point no permission or approval needed (^.^)
yeah, force your 18 year old kid into a hasty marriage so he feels like he has permission to have sex with his girlfriend, that’s how things happened for the longest time and the divorce rate is only SLIGHTLY higher than 50%, primarily for that reason, it’s fine…
The fact that Greg chose to have this [almost] proposal happen on his 50th wedding anniversary tells me that Gunther and Bets are indeed going to go through with it. It would be odd to juxtapose such an important personal holiday on the cartoonist’s part with an event in the Luanniverse that doesn’t pan out. In effect, it would be wasting the opportunity to put an exclamation point on his and Betty’s own marriage by using Gunther and Bets, in effect, as avatars for themselves. My money is on wedding bells.
maybe they could satisfy Al and Irma by getting quasi engaged and having a very long engagement with the idea that if they are still together when they graduate then they can marry.
…um, did Irma just call Bets a whore? I mean, words do have meanings, and “bawdyhouse” is an (extremely) old-fashioned word for a brothel, so yeah, Irma just called Bets a whore. I guess Lucille Bluth here really doesn’t like it when some other woman threatens to take her Buster away from her.
Someone predicted this! Don’t get married JUST to shack up because the ‘rents demand it. Get married when you’re good and ready for the responsibilities of a marriage. Just move in with Bets in the dorm. Kip is already doing it.
If rent is going to be involved, find an apartment and dump Les. He won’t have Gunther to kick around any more and can spend more time practicing up on his own Blofeld/Dr. Evil cosplay of sitting whilst petting a cat.
Actually, it’s fine with me. I married at 18. There were ups and downs. I noticed that it doesn’t matter when the marriage starts. All marriages have ups and downs. We have been married since 1973.
I wonder if Greg and Betty went through this 50 years ago.Life was different for our parents in the 40’s and 50’s. They lived through pandemics, the market crash and, in some cases, two world wars. Wonder how our grands will cope. I’m not sure Gunther isn’t just proposing to placate Irma and Al. Bad idea.
I have lived the life of Gunther!!! All through my teen years everyone i was interested in turned me down, most just wanted me as a friend. Finally met someone who wanted to be with me. Unfortunately I was at the “Anyone is better than no one” stage in my life. She moved in with me the day we met, we were married about a year later. She never trusted me, always accused me of cheating. Made me break off from my old friends as she didn’t trust them, and my family tossed me out because of my terrible choice in partners. We were together 8 years before I managed to get the courage to get her out of my life and try again. Never found anyone else willing to get involved with me so I ended up alone after all. She died about 8 years after we separated. That was 11 years ago this month. Loneliness is better than a bad life partner.
I really don’t think Gunther’s Mom is happy with Al issuing orders about Gunther’s relationship. And he seems to have forgotten who’s property the “guest house” sits on!
Here’s an idea. Brad & Tony win the lottery and now have the money to buy a house. T.J. goes along with them as the live in cook and babysitter. Les, Gunther & Bets rent the old house from the Degroots
OT except for those who participated in the discussion on how Brooke McEldowney doomed “9 Chickweed Lane” with the racist dialogue which caused a number of newspapers to drop the strip:
Guess what the Los Angeles Times has chosen as its replacement on the comics page?
So Al and Irma got 9 Chickweed Lane pulled from some California rag and replaced it with themselves. I guess the street people voted. Not to worry. Pretty soon California will be replaced by China, and it will be renamed, New Taiwan.
Well, didn’t see this one coming. Best move, Bets grabs Gunthers hand and they leave to talk it over. Emotions are too high now to think rationally. Even if they were that deep in love. Or assuming a “very long” engagment, like (years).
This is just plain silly. Its 2021 not 1975. Its just not realistic. I lived with my GF in the nineties and both my Grandparents were fine with it let alone my parents.

I’m with Les’ dad on this one!
Anon4242 about 3 years ago

Act like a child, be treated like one.

Gray….yet.

Squoop about 3 years ago
Given how Bets scampered away in fear after that time Gunther said I love you, and despite her recent testing of the waters of trust, I’d say this was not the right move for Gunther for those reasons alone. But there are plenty more, such as that you don’t propose to someone on the spur of the moment in order to prove a point to your parents. Now he has put Bets on the spot, especially after she just claimed they were committed to each other. The best response she could make now that would save the day, is something like “maybe someday!”
Same2Ubuddy about 3 years ago
Tomorrow’s strip will start with Gunther’s thought bubble showing Bet’s turning into wifezilla and the two of them living in the ’hood. The final panel will have Gunther saying “Strike the previous comment”.

candomarty Premium Member about 3 years ago
The fact that Greg chose to have this [almost] proposal happen on his 50th wedding anniversary tells me that Gunther and Bets are indeed going to go through with it. It would be odd to juxtapose such an important personal holiday on the cartoonist’s part with an event in the Luanniverse that doesn’t pan out. In effect, it would be wasting the opportunity to put an exclamation point on his and Betty’s own marriage by using Gunther and Bets, in effect, as avatars for themselves. My money is on wedding bells.
